DEF system

At 48,000 miles my DEF pump had to be replaced. This was a warranty issue and I was told by the Chevy dealer that it was not a problem they had seen before. I pulled our 5th wheel to Arizona recently and the warning light came on telling me I had 1500 miles to reduced power and to add fluid. We didn't have far to go so I didn't add fluid immediately. A few days later I get another warning to add fluid, so at this point I put in 2.5 gallons. The warning light and now the SES light were now on. I took the truck to the dealer locally and they diagnosed it and said it needs a DEF pump. He also said they never see this. Does anyone know if low fluid levels may cause the pump to overheat? This is my theory but the service manager said no. BTW, the truck is now at 60,000 miles.

What year truck?

The def pump modules on the LML trucks are a very common issue. There is an extended warranty for some trucks to 120k miles for them that GM has out.

So any dealer that says they have never seen it before, either doesnt work on the diesels hardly at all, or is lying. I'm betting they are lying.

I would delete it while you can. Best thing you can do for the truck, and you.

2015. You mean delete the entire DEF system? How detailed is this project? Is was done under warranty both times.

Yeah 11-16 is an LML. So your definitely in the years of the trucks with known def module issues. Especially the heaters.

And yeah, I mean getting rid of all the BS they put on the trucks. Doc, dpf, scr and egr. Even with just a stock delete tune you'll notice how much better the truck runs. Not to mention better fuel milage.

different style of truck and engine but the same thing may apply here... We had a customer that went through 4 def pumps within a month. He wold get no more than a couple of hundred km and it would fail again.. Would not fail completely but enough that it needed to be replaced... Well after a long conversation with cummins we found out that their was a bad batch of reman units and we were told to order new only until they could get all the bad units out of stock. That did not work as their was no new to be found anyware so we just kept replacing them until we finally got a good one

That's kinda scarey, let's hope that's not the case here. It's tempting to eliminate the DEF system but I have many more questions than answers. Would eliminating the DEF system void my factory warranty on my drivetrain?

It will cost at you probally around a grand all said and done unless you find someone to tune it on the cheap.

The tune is the most expensive part.

You likely will not find write ups anymore unless they are old. Everyone has gone tight lip online in regard to this stuff. And for good reason. We dont want big brother goons shutting down the parts and tune sources.

Sounds smart given the nature of the topic. Thanks for the reply.

Yeah it's one of those things that has always been "illegal" but recently the epa put a crack down on the vendors that sell the parts and tunes.

All depends on your area. Some states its harder to get away with than others. Here in PA I have yet to hear a case where the private individual was fined for a deleted pickup if they were being normal about it (ie not being a clown and blowing black smoke everywhere).

Commercial use is a different story. You need to be more careful in how you make it look. A stealth delete is needed in that case.

It appears my DEF pump may be out again. My check engine light came on so I had Onstar diagnose it and they said its the emissions system. Exactly how it happened last time. January 2020 was the last failure. It's going into the Chevy dealer on Monday. I guess I need to get confident in changing it myself. This is getting old. I don't have much hope in deleting the entire system.
